Spring Colour Faves

ColourSpring Colour Faves

We’ve had months to digest Pantone’s selection of colours for spring 2017. These colours can be seen on runways around the world. Indeed, that’s why they made it onto the list.

As Laurie Pressman writes, Pantone’s Spring 2017 colours are strongly influenced by nature. Many of them are recognizably floral, foliage or gem inspired. Read the full colour report HERE.

As usual, I’ve got favourites and I think you’ll like my picks. My favourite 5 are Flame, Greenery, Pale Dogwood, Lapis blue and Primrose yellow.

Pantone Spring 2017 colour - Flame

If you’ve been to Abuja at the height of the rainy season, you’ll find this superbly intense red-orange very familiar. It reminds me of the blossoms that crown the ‘Flame of the forest’ trees ( Delonix regia ) that line many streets here. The bigger the tree, the more majestic its fiery crown.

It’ll be great to see how our fashion designers use this colour in the coming months. Jewellery designers like me will look to coral, carnelian and crystal beads to capture this intense red-orange.

Pantone COY 2017 - Greenery

This lovely leafy green is Pantone’s choice for Color of the Year 2017. It oozes freshness and liveliness. It’s a color that’s so familiar that everyone likes it on some level.

Cocktail dresses and gowns in this color are probably already selling out. And if top-down green is not your thing, you can use Greenery as a highlight for many colours including whites, yellows and reds.

Pantone Spring 2017 Colors - Pale Dogwood

I was all over the Rose quartz trend last year. Though slightly different, Pale dogwood is clearly a nod to Rose Quartz. It’s a bit lighter and airier, which certainly amps up its subtle soothing effect.

This means we can expect to see more pastel pinks in the worlds of fashion and jewellery design. Bring on the Rose Quartz beads!

Pantone Spring 2017 Colors - Lapis Blue

Well hello lovers of royal blue – this one’s for you. Lapis blue is aptly named after ‘Lapis Lazuli’, a semi-precious gemstone whose lavish royal blues are legendary.

I expect to see more jewellery made with Lapis Lazuli and Lazulite this year. Gemstones like Tanzanite and Sapphire may also be in demand in the months ahead. The great thing about this colour is there’s absolutely no limit to how it can be worn!

Pantone Spring 2017 Colors - Primrose Yellow

While Greenery is the COY 2017, Primrose yellow is the ‘Wow’ colour of the season. It’s already making waves. Did you see Tracy Ellis Ross’ outfit at the Golden Globes? She looked amazing!

That’s pretty much what this vibrant colour does. It is pure sunshine. I know fashion and accessories designers will waste no time exploiting this trend to the fullest.
