Gemstones for Greenery - By HMJServices

Colour, Jewellery StyleGemstones for Greenery

‘Greenery’ is Pantone’s pick for colour of the year 2017. It’s one of many trendy colours this season. Like Rose Quartz and Serenity, it’s a very familiar colour and perhaps, that is its charm.

Like I did with the Colours of 2016, I went searching for gemstones that can channel Greenery in fine and costume jewellery designs. I found quite a few but before I get into all that gemmy goodness, I’ll take a moment to put this colour trend into some perspective.

According to Pantone, they choose colours for each season based on existing or emerging trends in the worlds of fashion and graphic design. And truthfully, greens have been quite popular for the past 2 years. The design world has been awash with botanical and leaf-inspired prints for a while now. Many fashion collections have featured botanical motifs like Palm prints, Banana leaf prints, Ginkgo leaf prints, and Fern fronds alongside brightly-coloured florals.

And as a growing Surface Pattern Designer, I can tell you that these motifs have also been trending in stationery, packaging and home-goods designs. So you can see that Greenery is a nice reflection of a design trend that’s still going strong.

Pantone COY 2017 - Greenery

There are many beautiful gemstones that come in greens. While Emerald is perhaps the most popular one, Greenery is actually a yellow green that’s different from Emerald greens which tend to be deeper.

I found 4 gemstones that channel Greenery beautifully. The #1 gemstone on this list is one that most jewellery and gem experts agree is a perfect match for Greenery.

#1 PERIDOT
Peridot & Diamond Ring

Seeing Peridot in all its lime green glory will make you fall in love! It’s a lovely yellow green gemstone which experts say is the perfect gem for Greenery. It’s found in many parts of the world including Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. It’s also known to occur only in shades of green. While darker green peridots can be mistaken for Emeralds as they were in Ancient Egypt, the most valued colour of Peridot is the one that closely matches Greenery.

As this exquisite Peridot and diamond ring shows, Greenery works well with crisp whites, off-whites and silver grays.

#2 JADE & JADEITE
Jade & Peridot Ring

The ring above is beautiful and unique. It’s a Jade hololith ring with a Peridot center stone set in a gold bezel. It’s a fine example of how some Jades are a perfect match for Peridot. And clearly, Jade is a great way to add hints of Greenery to your jewellery designs.

Jade is a gemstone that’s renowned for its value in imperial and present-day China. Because of its beauty and strength, it’s been used for ornamental and functional purposes for thousands of years. While most think Jade is always green, it actually occurs in many colours including yellow, orange, black and gray.

The ring above is also a good demonstration of how easy it is to pair Greenery with Golds!

#3 VERDELITE TOURMALINE
Verdelite Tourmaline from Brazil

Verdelite Tourmaline is an Elbaite Tourmaline. Unlike Chrome Tourmaline, which is a great Emerald simulant, Verdelite tends to occur in lighter shades of green that sometimes more closely resemble the yellow green of Peridot. That makes it a great way to add the color Greenery to jewellery designs.

Verdelite Tourmaline is found in many parts of the world including right here in Nigeria.

#4 GREEN AVENTURINE
Tumbled Green Aventurine

Green Aventurine is a variety of Quartz that’s popular with artisan and beaded jewellery makers. It’s popular for 2 reasons. First, it sometimes occurs with small specks that glitter – a quality known as Aventurescence. Second, it’s much more affordable than the first 3 gemstones on this list.

As you can see, Green Aventurine occurs in a range of greens that includes the vibrant lime green typified by Peridot and Jade. Also like Jade, Green Aventurine beads and cabochons are very easy to come by. If you’re looking to buy beaded jewellery with strong hints of Greenery, be on the lookout for ones that are made with Green Aventurine.

OTHER GREEN GEMSTONES

Other gemstones that may sometimes be found in shades of Greenery include Tsavorite, Chrysoprase and Fluorite.

More Ways To Combine Greenery

With Corals

In addition to silver grays and yellow golds, Greenery would look fabulous combined with corals. I should warn that if your greens are a bit darker than the fresh, light shade of Greenery, it may be best to balance your combo with neutrals like grays and mild golds.

With Pinks & Purple

Lime greens and pinks have always been a good colour combo. And purple adds a nice hint of opulence to the mix. However, use these colours skillfully to avoid a gaudy, overdone look. This combo looks absolutely stunning when combined well.

With Teal & Turquoise

Another very beautiful way to combine Greenery is with Teal & turquoise. I remember this was the colour theme for a good friend’s wedding some years ago. It has a ‘Wow’ effect that makes for stand-out outfits and accessories.
